Although Hill Country Bible is housing this conference, it was by no means our idea. We have been pounding the rock in our church planting efforts for many years, and, Lord willing, we should see numbers 20 and 21 launched this fall, and another four residents loaded for the coming year.
As time has progressed we began to telescope our church plants beyond our ability to hive off yet another large cadre of laborers into a similar environment and culture. It is one thing to make the sacrifices to leave the comforts of a megachurch. It is entirely another thing to leave behind relationships, move to another region of the city and engage the culture where we do not have home field advantage, moving out of the Christendom suburb to engage secular culture.
It takes both missionary zeal and missionary thinking to advance the Kingdom in that kind of radical way.
My good friend Michael Stewart at the Austin Stone is the one who invited us into this conversation that has spilled beyond the phone lines of missional thinkers all over the nation and into the VERGE Conference. The question we all have been asking is a very naïve one: “What if we began to take a hard look at the viral nature of church planting movements where Christianity is exploding
We have been asking this question for some time, and it is a liberating question. It is a transcendent question. It transcends our desire to promote our selves and our particular brand. It transcends the goal of building a really good church and takes the kingdom, and goes viral. I think we are on the “verge” of something amazing.
Every follower of Jesus has prayed, “Your Kingdom Come, your will be done ON EARTH as it is in heaven.” This VERGE Conference is for all the dreamers who have ever wondered if God willed that his kingdom would spill over into the larger community, outside the walls even of a really good faith community. If you have dreamed that kind of dream, this conference should thrill your heart.
While many will not be “on the platform,” we can all join the dialogue. Verge is about more than hearing some provocative messages. It is about community, family, repenting and networking. It is about what God wants to say through you and me as well as to you and me.
